Why a college
South Sudan has one of the lowest ratios of trained health workers to population in the world. Sending students abroad to train is expensive, and many do not come back.
A college attached to a working hospital solves both problems at once: students learn on the wards they will later staff, and they qualify in the community they come from.
What we teach
Both programmes combine classroom teaching with supervised clinical placement at Mary Help Hospital from the first year.
General nursing practice for hospital and community settings.
Safe delivery, maternal health and newborn care — the skills South Sudan is shortest of.
On the wards
The college sits beside Mary Help Hospital, so clinical placement is not a once-a-year trip. Students are on the wards from Year 1, supervised by the staff who work there.
By graduation they have seen the conditions they will actually treat: malaria, malnutrition, complicated deliveries and the everyday work of a rural hospital.

Somewhere to live
Students from outside Wau can stay in supervised, single-sex hostels on campus for the whole of their studies — with a house parent, a dining hall and study space.
For many families this is what makes the course possible at all.
