Why we exist
Mary Help Association is a faith-based organisation of the Catholic Diocese of Wau, founded in 2000. We provide humanitarian and developmental services to people in need, irrespective of race, religion, ideology or political affiliation.

Who we are
To serve the people of Wau and Western Bahr el Ghazal — whoever they are, whatever their faith — with healthcare, education, clean water and food, so that families can meet today’s needs and build tomorrow’s.
A South Sudan where every mother delivers safely, every child learns in a classroom, and every community has the trained people and the clean water it needs to look after its own.

The need
South Sudan has one of the world’s most severe shortages of nurses and midwives, and mothers in rural areas often deliver with no trained help at all.
Our answer: a College of Nursing & Midwifery, opened 2007.
Each year families run out of stored food before the next harvest is ready. Children are pulled out of school, and the youngest show it first.
Our answer: seeds, tools and training for 2,400 families a year, and a daily meal for 35,000 children.
Jur River County had no health facility. For a woman in labour or a sick child, the nearest care was a journey most families could not make in time.
Our answer: a maternal and child hospital 10km north of Wau.

Our story
We did not arrive for a project and leave when it ended. Mary Help Association has worked in Wau without interruption — through war, displacement and rebuilding.
Mary Help Association is founded under the Catholic Diocese of Wau, starting with a clinic and a primary school.
Mary Help College of Nursing and Midwifery begins training South Sudanese nurses and midwives at home.
The hospital opens inpatient care, so mothers and children no longer travel for admission.
